What Are Stainless Steel Plates?
Stainless steel plates are thick, flat-rolled metal products made from stainless steel. They are typically thicker than stainless steel sheets (usually over 6mm or 0.25 inches in thickness) and are known for their excellent strength, corrosion resistance, and durability.
Made primarily from iron with a minimum of 10.5% chromium, stainless steel plates form a protective oxide layer on the surface, which helps resist rust, oxidation, and chemical attack. Depending on the grade (e.g., 304, 316, 310S, 2205, etc.), stainless steel plates can offer additional benefits like heat resistance, strength under pressure, or resistance to specific corrosive environments.
How Stainless Steel Plates Are Made?
1. Melting and Casting
Raw materials such as iron ore, chromium, nickel, and other alloying elements are melted together in an electric arc furnace at high temperatures. Once fully melted and refined, the molten steel is cast into semi-finished shapes called slabs.
2. Hot Rolling
The steel slabs are heated to about 1,100°C (2,000°F) and passed through rollers to reduce thickness. This process is called hot rolling. It produces a rough-surfaced but structurally strong stainless steel sheet known as a hot-rolled coil.
3. Annealing and Descaling
The hot-rolled sheet is then annealed—heated and cooled under controlled conditions—to soften the steel and relieve internal stresses. After annealing, the sheet undergoes descaling (removal of surface oxides) using acid baths, a process called pickling.
4. Cold Rolling (for Higher Precision)
To improve surface finish, dimensional accuracy, and mechanical properties, the sheet may be cold rolled. This involves passing the annealed sheet through rollers at room temperature to achieve the desired thickness.
5. Final Annealing and Pickling
After cold rolling, the sheet is again annealed and pickled to restore its corrosion resistance and remove any scale or work hardening caused by the cold working process.
6. Finishing
The sheet surface can be further processed to achieve specific finishes, such as:
2B finish (smooth, matte)
BA (bright annealed) finish
No.4 (brushed finish)
Mirror finish (highly polished)
7. Cutting and Inspection
Finally, the stainless steel sheet is trimmed to size, tested for quality, and prepared for packaging and shipment to various industries.
