317L stainless steel is a molybdenum-based austenitic stainless steel. With L behind the number, 317L is a low carbon grade. It has stronger resistance to chemical corrosion than conventional chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels sheets such as 304 stainless steel plate. In addition, 317L has higher ductility, stress corrosion resistance, compressive strength and high temperature resistance than conventional stainless steel. It exhibits anti-sensitization properties during welding and heat treatment.
As a commonly used stainless steel plate product, 317L stainless steel plate is manufactured by hot rolled coils, resulting in sheet thicknesses typically over 3mm. Compared to cold rolled stainless steel sheet, these hot rolled plates have a whiter finish.
