309S stainless steel is a close variant of 309 grade. With all other chemical compositions the same, 309S sheet has lower carbon content, i. e., 0.08% at maximum (while 309: 0.20% at maximum). This makes 309S quite easy for welding. The lower carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation in the heat zone of the welds and thus avoid inter granular corrosion which can otherwise happen in the welds.
As a commonly used stainless steel sheet product, 309S stainless steel sheet is manufactured by cold-rolling, flattening, and shearing precision coils, resulting in sheet thicknesses typically under 3mm. Compared to hot rolled stainless steel plate, these cold rolled sheets offer a brighter surface finish, making them suitable for both functional and aesthetic uses.
